How's Your Self Perception?
Greg: You said you felt discouraged momentarily when you were fighting through that technical issue. What kind of head trash was feeding your discouragement? What were you thinking?
Deb: I definitely had head trash. If I am just wasting my time, I probably need to move on. What am I doing this for? What can I learn from this? I mean, that's a big one. Maybe I'm not able to learn this. Maybe I am incapable of that, but then I go back to what I KNOW. I have to combat that with what I really can do and I think, oh no, those principles are the same.
Greg: So how did you combat your head trash?
- Identify the head trash you are facing with what self-talk is going on in your head.
- Create new Language: Take just one of the phrases in the first step and turn the negative into a positive. (I know I can learn this if I watch a few instructional videos. Instead of .... I'm not smart enough to learn this!)
- Make a list of what you have accomplished. This may surprise you. Spend some time on this to include both job skills and hobbies!
- Apply one of your accomplishments to your positive phrase. I know I can do this because I have... in the past.
- Repeat this process!
Focus on What You Have Done
Deb: Let's see...I have memorized hundred page concertos. I know how to do much of the technical stuff. I've worked in a studio where I've had to figure out how to record, how to import and export sound files. So now I'm just stuck on a little bit of code here? It always just stymies me because I hate to waste time.
Greg: So the battle is, when tempted to have bad self-perception, you went back through your successful life history.
Deb: Yes. At least I have the persistence to do it-and the tenacity more than persistence. I’ve successfully demonstrated certain skills, then developed additional skills with persistence. If I quit, I won't develop the skill at all. You have to keep going!
