Lost Momentum?
If you watched any of the momentous mudslides that recently occurred in Santa Barbara County, California, you saw momentum in action. Recent wildfires burned the top protective layer of the ground, enabling the downpour of rain to seep deep into the soil. As the rain came down, the now-thin and slick top layer loosened and started sliding down the hill, taking everything with it as it developed unbelievable speed.
Trees, boulders the size of cars and walls of mud came racing down the hills, destroying anything in its path. Cars were even swept away in rivers of mud.
This is not the type of momentum we wish on anyone, as the death toll is now higher than what was recently experienced in the fierce wildfires. However, it demonstrates the principle of momentum that can be applied to your life.
The Principle of Momentum
Halftime for Women(and men too!) holds challenges that if not met, will cause healthy momentum to absolutely STOP. Many are frozen with the challenges of fear, anxiety, confusion or lack of confidence.
I recently spoke with Maggie, who is now eighty-six years young and swims every morning at my gym. (I interviewed her in my book Bad Code) She doesn’t even think about her age. She treats swimming as her job and takes community college language courses to keep her mind sharp. Her optimism is contagious, creating momentum throughout her days. I want to be like that!
Channel Your Energy
Doing little things to channel your energy, such as eliminating what is unnecessary in your life and keeping your mind sharp with clear goals and purpose, will quickly build momentum. When you define your purpose and hone down your schedule, you will not just get more done, but get the right things done, building even more momentum.
Deciding to be Enough is also a very important principle to building your momentum. (read article: Not Good Enough) Identifying and understanding your personal core strengths andnot playing the comparison game are crucial to positive self-talk and momentum!
Review Your Life Policy
My husband and I were in Santa Barbara a day before all the mudslides occurred. While there, we met a couple from Texas who were adjusters for AAA. (Auto Club of Calif.) They had been there for over a month and we heard they will be there quite a bit longer. They are on the front lines of disaster, giving people hope and encouragement with supplies and reviews of insurance policies. Sometimes the news is good and sometimes it is devistating.
