For Mothers and Others at Halftime

For Mothers and Others at Halftime

Mother or Other?

Whether or not a mother, remember when you were in your 20’s?  It was an exciting time as you ran with full force toward a wonderful career! Now, they’re starting to call you ma’am.  Really? Isn’t that what they called your mom? You're wondering if it’s time for a change. Should you do something else? Do you really know what your strengths and skills are?  How can your competencies translate into professional growth and a job? And how much do you really want to work?

If you had kids in your 20’s, they are now heading fast toward college and beyond. It’s nice if they call you once in awhile. Where were those days of diapers and holding them close? If you had kids in your 30’s or even 40’s, hold on! The time races by and teen years are coming-fast! For those with no kids, there is the stark realization that your childbearing years are coming to an end. That may or may not matter to you.

Whether or not a woman has children, a woman in the 21st century goes through many changes, especially at halftime! The career focus changes, the body changes, relationships change and many times, fear and panic set in with the lack of confidence and direction. The support for women at this time is never more crucial than today. Women at halftime need to realize they have the freedom, ability and skills to really make a difference!

For this post going out on Mother's Day, I’m including the lyrics to a song I wrote, then recorded in 2013, I Can Fly. Every time I perform it, the message encourages me to dream big and realize all I have done in the past has led to this moment today. I hope it also encourages you as well to spread your wings and fly!

I Can Fly

Music & Lyrics by © Deborah Johnson

She studied hard, she thought she’d never stop,

Graduated with honors, headed for the top

Thought she’d get a job, with a future they said,

As she waited tables, she questioned them instead

AT THIS TIME IN HER LIFE

Fate will fall where it may, then she will look to a better day

In the prime of her life

With her dreams so high, she could fly at this |time in her life.

She fell in love and was over the moon

Landing the job of her dreams, they’d start a family soon

They added one, then two, and then three.

Now buried in diapers as far as she can see

AT THIS TIME IN HER LIFE

More to do than ever before, she waits for a break today

Now’s the prime of her life

She wonders why she had dreams so high,

Her kids grew up tall and strong to make it on their own

Once in awhile they call her, when they need a loan

The job she had is gone, and the times have changed

Now she scans the want ads, it all feels so strange

The years are passing faster now, she still has some youth

But lines are growing deeper as she faces the truth

She reinvents the girl of many, many years ago

But she’s a different woman now to where she wants to go

AT THIS TIME IN HER LIFE

Fate has fallen where it could fall, she looks to a better day

In the prime of her life

With her dreams so high, it’s time to fly at this time in her life.

She looks to leave a legacy for those to come

To live a life of meaning is what she had done

As I see this woman and her future ahead

I see my reflection, it was me, it was me instead

AT THIS TIME IN MY LIFE

Fate has fallen where it could fall, this is my better day

It’s the prime of my life

With dreams so high, I can fly at this time in my life.

Now’s the prime of my life

With dreams so high, I can fly at this time in my life.

I can fly, I can fly, I can fly!
